How to write the Artist Reviews:

During this class I will be giving you writing assignments concerning ceramic artists.  The reason I do this is that you need to write papers and writing skills in life are very important.  Secondly, I need you to do independent research on these artists to help you understand the history of ceramics and how it impacts current artists.  By looking at these artists without taking up valuable class time, I find student receive better grades.  The majority of your grade in this class is based on your ability to control clay as an artist medium.  By giving you more time to work on the clay you are improving your grade.

You will be given a sheet of paper at the beginning of each class. This handout includes the names and pictures of the work of one or more artists.  Don’t combine artists, select only one per paper.  I will always accept additional papers from students.  If you feel that a paper isn’t up to the grade you want in the class you can always submit more than one paper.  Also, if you request it, I will give you additional artists to work on.

Look on the internet and find examples of the work of the artist you selected.  Some of these artists are “emerging artists” and some of these people have extensive careers.  Look at the work and read about the artist.  Then write me a review of the work.  Give a historic background of the work, type of work (how is it made, techniques etc.).  It may be necessary to do a separate search on the technique.  When you do the internet search list the technique and then include the word ceramics.  This should get you to some web sites that have information about the topic. Look for shows the artist is participating in.  They often have “artist statements” or show reviews that would be very helpful to your review.

The second section of the paper should have a biographical statement about the artist.  Where did he/she go to school, where do they work, and what are their accomplishments.

The third section is the most important.  Include your thoughts about the work.

In this exercise your opinion counts. I don’t care if you like it or not.  Your preferences are not what are being evaluated in your paper.  Read about the art and make comment about what the artists, or others, have said about the art.  Agree or disagree but give me your reasoning about the work.

You can bring a copy of the review with you to the next class or you can email me your assignment at jerry@jerrybennett.net subject line is to be “Holy Family” or “HFU”. This subject line designation is very important.  I get a large number of  junk emails and this allows my internet mail service to forward your work to me without labeling it spam and discarding your email.  I will try to respond to you that I have received your email submission.

Your paper should be about one page in length.  Grading is based on “I” incomplete, “A” for average, and “E” for excellent.  Student scores are compared at the end of the class for the writing grade.

If you see something on the internet that disturbs you please choose another artist.  If you are offended by something send me a message via email and let me know.  Remember, art never hurt anybody!

Don’t type work from the internet.  Use your own thoughts to write the review.  When I get fifteen reports about the same artist, I can tell if you lift writing from the internet.
